[So she does, plops down next to him with a word or a change in her usual steady expression.

Laura simply lets their thighs touch on the cold bench and shares the warmth. She is not sure how to ask if anything is wrong even if it is, so she doesn't, decides to look out over the calm lake instead.

She is not good at this. But she feels comfortable enough with Bobby not to pretend, or feel shame.]

[He's learned long ago that he can never hide what he's feeling from her, even if sometimes she doesn't really understand those feelings. So he nods, leaning forward to rest his forearms on his knees, drawing small comfort from her proximity, which he knows is her way of showing concern.]

[He glances at her, but she gives nothing away in her expression - simply gazes out at the lake, waiting.]

My mother called me today. First time I've heard from any of my family in years.

[He shakes his head slightly, because - well, yes, what she said bothered him. But just the mere fact that she called at all bothered him. The fact that he was their last resort bothered him.] Not exactly.

[With a sigh, he leans back, his hand seeking hers though his gaze remains on the lake.]

There is a reaction from Laura now, at the mention of his brother. Her brows furrow and her eyes focus.]

[Whatever he'd been expecting from Laura, he hadn't really been expecting that. She said it so simply, so easily. He blinks at her, surprised, and maybe a little touched.]

I... you don't have to do that. I talked to Emma earlier, she said she'd help...

[His hand tightens just slightly around hers and his expression is honest and raw.]

He doesn't like mutants. Even if I find him... I don't think he'll want to come home with me. Or anyone like me.

I would incapacitate him temporarily. He would not be hurt. [ This is just the most efficient answer, Bobby. Laura sees the raw honesty in your expression and only blinks her wide eyes, feels a tugging inside of her. She is able to do this for him. ] I am trained for retrieval missions.

[At the word 'incapacitate', he starts slightly, fingers tightening.] No. [He says it firmly, almost vehemently, and it is only when she blinks at him that he softens, just a little. This is all she knows, he has to remind himself. This is the only way she knows how to help..]

No. [He says it more gently this time, and squeezes her hand lightly to try to convey that he is not angry or ungrateful.] Thank you for offering, but... this is something I think I need to do. And maybe if I bring him home, my family won't be so...
