Bobby's aftermath threads

Content: There's a lot of things to deal with in the wake of the past couple of days...

Okay, so, in order to preserve my sanity while I get back into the rhythm of things with class, I'm trying something a little different. This will work kind of like the day-in-the-life posts, except I'm just going to throw up a few comments for a few specific characters, and then a general "Bobby's in the kitchen eating ice cream; come say hi" one which anyone can tag into after that. =)

Comments will be in vague chronological order, but we all know that TIME IS IN FLUX at XMH, so it doesn't matter too much when this stuff happens!

But everyone made it back.

[It's code, X-men code for "You must've done a good job." Any mission where no one dies is a good one.]

I heard you did pretty good though, sugah.

Yeah, everyone made it back. [He understands the code - not having to attend any memorial services is always counted as a win. He gives her a small smile, a gesture of appreciation for the confidence she's shown in him. Kitty, Emma, Rogue - they've all told him that he's done well, and while he doesn't feel a sense of pride, exactly, the mess of self-doubt in his head is beginning to blur at the edges, and he begins to think, I can do this.] Thanks.

I hear you did a pretty good job yourself, protecting everyone here.

[Of course she has confidence in him. Just because they haven't dated for awhile doesn't mean that her respect for him as a leader and as an X-men has diminished any. She finishes making her sandwich and takes a bit of it before taking a seat at the kitchen table near him, washing it down with some water.]

Heh. Thanks. [She takes another drink of water.] I just followed orders though. A lot more people than just me were fighting too.

Yeah. But... [He pauses, unsure if he should say this next part - but in the end he decides to keep going, because... why not?] I know it hasn't been... easy for you, since you got your powers back. But despite the setbacks, from what I've seen from you, what I read in the reports... [He catches her gaze and holds in, expression sincere.] You're strong, Rogue. Stronger than you think. Better than you realise.

Bobby, I... [It takes her a few moments to get her thoughts together. Because despite her confidence in him, she's never completely understood his confidence in her. She's never understood why he's always had such unwavering faith in her.] I still feel like it's all such a struggle; the psyches, my damn powers, all of it. I don't... I don't know how to handle things getting better anymore. [She ducks her head, blushing faintly.] And now I'm not makin' any sense.

[He tilts his head slightly and watches her stare at her sandwich, observing the light tinge of pink in her cheeks. For so long he'd been the only one besides Logan who she opened up to; he knows better than almost anyone how much she's suffered through. He knows that he's not that person for her any more, and it's a thought that brings a slight pang of nostalgia. But here she is, admitting her struggles to him. And Bobby appreciates it for what it is - a display of trust in a good friend.]

Have things been getting better? I mean... after what happened, you've got another psyche in there...

[She tilts her head to the side, thinking for a moment before tapping a finger against one temple.] It's a little bit more crowded up there but but... it's been a lot worse in the past. [There's no need to say that the "lot worse" was Magneto. He knows.] But overall... I guess that it's a lot better than it has been. So yeah. It's better.

[He nods. Yeah, she doesn't have to say it. Bobby offers her a small, understanding smile.] That's really good, Rogue. [Pause.] And you're... you're okay, after everything that went down here?

[She raises an eyebrow with a hint of amusement in her expression. Because okay can over so many things.] I'll be a bit sore for a few days more but I'm guessin' that's not what you meant exactly?

[He lets out a breath of laughter, shakes his head.] Not exactly, no. [Despite his light tone, he is actually a little concerned. Not because he doesn't think she can handle it, but because Rogue has a history of not saying when she isn't okay, and she went through a lot yesterday - Bobby just wants to make sure everything's fine.]

[She grins, glad for the more light hearted moment before sobering again.] It'll take a little bit to get used to extra baggage but I'll be okay. [There's a pause before she hastens to repeat herself.] Sugah, I promise. This ain't like before. I'll be okay.

[He can see from her face that she's being honest, and he nods, satisfied.] Okay. Good.

[He points his spoon at her, bringing their banter back up to light-hearted again.] I'm gonna hold you to that.

Uh-huh. Or what, sugah? [Her tone's firmly back in the realm of teasing again. She takes another bite of her sandwich before grinning broadly and continuing their banter.] You gonna make me run more DR sessions? Can you do that since you're officially a leader now?

Nah, I'll just tell Logan I think you've been slacking off in training. [Bobby returns the grin and says his next sentence around half a mouthful of ice cream.] Or I'll do a Scott and look at you all disappointed and just slowly shake my head.

[He swallows and demonstrates in an uncanny impression of their Glorious Leader. The next words are said in an affected tone of heavy disappointment.]

You made me a promise, Rogue. Promises should be kept.

[Bobby can't help laughing at himself as he concludes his impression and digs into his ice cream again.]

[There's barely enough time for an expression of shocked indignation at the Logan quip before she's laughing a lot at Bobby's rather spot on Scott impression.]

Okay okay, you win! I think the threat of two disappointed Scotts will--

[And then she breaks off her sentence in favour of giggles again.]

Yeah, that's right, you don't wanna mess with me.

[It's been a while since they've laughed together, and Bobby is glad that they've finally reached that point where they can begin thinking of each other as friends instead of exes. He flashes her a crooked grim.]

Generations of future X-men will all quake in their boots at the thought of getting a scolding from you.

[Rogue tries to keep a straight face as she says it, she really does but she fails miserably. She's glad too that they've reached the point of being friends again. There aren't a whole lot of people in the mansion that she feels comfortable discussing things like this. It's nice that she doesn't have to explain many of the things that just drudge up bad memories for her; he already knows.]
