Kevin had torn a strip of cloth from his shirt to press against the worst of his wounds on his shoulder, but it wasn’t doing much to stop the bleeding. Plus, he was also bleeding from several other places, and it was seeping into the leather seat he was in.

“Aw, Kev!” Jono groaned. “We may inherit this someday! I don’t want our ride covered in bloodstains.”

“Shut up,” Kevin said, but neither of them were in the mood for real argument. They were grinning from the aftermath of surviving the battle, being flown back to the X-Mansion in the Blackbird. Emma Frost had managed to get a telepathic link with Logan through Cerebro, and sent Scott Summers with the X-Men’s private jet to pick up the team.

By the time that Emma had contacted Logan, the battle was already over, and reinforcements hadn’t been needed. Scott flew the jet himself, so, unfortunately for Kevin, Hank McCoy wasn’t on board to patch up his injuries.

Several of the students were staring at Kevin, intrigued. “You sure you’re gonna make it?” Ali asked, a touch of concern in her voice. “We can reupholster the jet, but finding skin in your shade might be a little tough...”

“I’ll be fine,” Kevin wheezed, beginning to look a little pale.

“Josh, maybe you...” Ali started to say, before Kevin cut her off.

“No! No touching. No touching,” Kevin said sharply.

“Is it just your people-phobia talking? Because I honestly wonder what would happen if Josh tries to touch you...” Jono mused aloud.

“Kev might catch the homo,” Julian scoffed derisively.

Bobby stared at Julian with a look on his face that plainly said You’re an idiot. “That’s real helpful, Julian,” he said, sarcasm dripping from every syllable.

“Death! DEATH!!” Kevin wailed weakly. “I’m telling you, death is what will happen if he touches me.”

“Come on. Stop being such a pussy,” Ali said, repeating her line from earlier that night.

“Quit calling me that! I am not a pussy!” Kevin said angrily. “I just don’t want to hurt him.”

Josh snorted, and said, “Please. You can’t hurt me.”

“You don’t know that!” Kevin said to him.

“Duuuude, you’re lame,” Ali said to both of them.

“I’m sure whatever damage you do, I can heal,” Josh said. Then, a glimmer of doubt crossed his face and he turned to Logan for support, who only shrugged from the co-pilot’s seat next to Scott.

“Beats me,” said Logan, who was about to light a cigar before it was slapped out of his hands by Scott.

The kids returned to their argument while Scott pointed to a “NO SMOKING” sign above the controls of the jet. “Do you know how hard it is to get the smell of cigar smoke out of leather?”

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you guys when he’s a pile of dust,” Kevin said bitterly, as he sank down lower into his seat. “Funeral services will have to be sponsored by Dirt Devil.”

“Bissell is classier, you know,” Ali argued. “And the yellow is a better color scheme for Foley.”

“Why not just try it? And then, you know, if he does explode into a pile of dust, that means I’d get to redecorate the homo’s side of the room and --” Julian began to say.

“Shut up, Julian!!” Josh raged. This only set off a fit of giggles from Julian. “Seriously, stop calling me that,” Josh said through clenched teeth.

Logan took a moment to turn around from the co-pilot’s seat and deliver a look to Julian, and then turned back.

Julian scoffed. “What?! This guy has a picture of dudes on his wall! Come on!”

Josh sighed with exasperation. “It’s a picture of last year’s Yankees World Series championship game, dummy. I took that photo myself from killer seats.”

This was something Julian never knew about Josh. Julian’s face twisted in anger that he hadn’t been in club-level seats for such an important game while Josh had. It was unthinkable. Unthinkable!

Meanwhile, Ali was still arguing with Kevin to let Josh give a try at healing him.

“You guys are acting like I’m bleeding to death! I’m going to be fine,” Kevin groaned with effort. “That mercury thing could’ve chewed me up into ground beef. But see, I’m fine.”

“You are bleeding to death,” Josh pointed out, which seemed to sober up everyone on the plane.

Kevin quieted down and stared at Josh. “It’s really that bad?” he asked.

With a nod, Josh said, “Just let me try. I’ll stop if it starts hurting me, okay? You need this.”

Kevin was growing weaker by the minute. He finally stopped arguing and fell silent.

Josh took a deep breath, and then reached out and grasped Kevin’s shoulder. Kevin flinched at the contact, and his breathing quickened as he began to have a panic attack typical of being close to other people.

“It’s okay,” Josh said. “I think it’s working. I can feel your powers, but I’m holding them back.”

“I can’t believe that’s possible,” Kevin mumbled, but he had to admit that he was feeling better. Within just a few seconds, the bleeding had stopped completely and Josh had let go of his shoulder.

“Wow. Thanks,” Kevin said.

“Hey. No problem,” said Josh casually, hiding his palm from Kevin. Some of the flesh had decayed, but as he’d predicted earlier, he was able to heal himself back to normal. The metallic black had receded from his hands, and had gone back to being a liquid-like blob that floated over his skin from place to place.

"Yes," Jono added, not being able to help butting in. "We're all happy you didn't end up being a giant doggie chew toy."
