[SCENE] Jubes and Remy go for a walk
The hall of the boy's dormitory was unusually quiet for 7 in the evening, thanks mostly in part to the impromptu Halo tournament going on in the game room. Guys and their video games, Jubilee thought to herself. It had been fun watching for a little while-who knew Bobby had such a vicious streak?-but she'd excused herself after noticing the absence of one particular male. The one who resided in room 104, to be specific. And oh look, she was right in front of 104 right now. How about that.
Jubilee palmed the card in her pocket, letting it catch on the inside of her knuckles and press into her hand. Swallowing hard, she raised her other hand to knock on the door, but let it fall back to her side before it hit the wood paneling. What is your deal? You're not nervous. You're never nervous. Well, except maybe that time right before you kissed Bobby. And that time you thought you might have a thing for John. And that time-cut it out.
After steeling her resolve, Jubilee lifted her fist again to knock, but before she could make contact with the door it opened and she rapped firmly on the chest of the tall Cajun standing behind it. He brought his hand up to his heart with an expression of mirth. "You checkin' to see if it's hollow, chere?"
"Yes! I mean-No! I mean-I brought your card back. Here!" Shoving the playing card at him, Jubilee didn't even wait to make sure he had taken it before she took off back down the hall.
"Hey now, hold on a minute!" Remy reached out and caught hold of Jubilee's jacket to halt her retreat, but her speed combined with his sure grip had an even better result; pulled off balance, her momentum caused her to go stumbling backwards into the arms of the very person she was trying to get away from.
She stared at him in shock as he smiled down on her. "I think I like this better. Now how about we go for a little walk?"
Releasing only one of the hands that he had captured, Remy spun Jubilee out of his arms but didn't release her hand from his firm grip, closing his door as he led them down he hall, Jubilee still blinking in astonishment. He smiled at her, giving her hand a squeeze as he tugged on her arm. "Don' worry, p'tit, Remy's a gentl'man."
She let him pull her in, bumping him with her hip. "I'll believe that when I see it."
"Now what's that s'posed to mean?" His eyes shimmered with mock hurt. "Remy don' lie, didn't you know that?"
"Ah-huh." They took a few steps in silence before the lack of words finally got to her. "So...what're you in for?"
"You know, chere." He grinned, holding up the card she had returned, charging it with a pink glow and flicking it into the air, the card erupting in a tiny explosion, leaving only the large, centre heart of the card with glowing, ashen edges. "Like you, Remy's got a spark of life in 'im."
Is this guy for real? jubilee thought, giggling as she let the heart drift into her free palm. "Yeah, okay. But you don't just get dropped off at a place like this by Captain America for no reason."
Remy sighed, giving her a sidelong look before turning his gaze to the ground. He was silent as he led her outside, the crisp autumn air a slight shock to the both of them. In slid his arm around Jubilee instinctively and led her down the steps into the gardens.
"Remy done some t'ings in de past, chere..." he stopped, slowing and it was Jubilee's turn to squeeze his hand. "T'ings he not so proud of now."
"Things like what?" Her eyes seemed to sparkle in the moonlight as she looked up at him.
"You ever heard o' the T'ieves Guild?"
"No, but you don't have to be Dr. McCoy to figure out what they're all about."
Remy nodded. "My brother an' I, we was part of it."
Jubilee pulled away to face him, her brow furrowing. "You mean...you were, like, a criminal?"
"Criminal-that be a pretty strong word." He nodded again. "But, I guess so."
"Wow." Turning the information she'd just heard over in her mind, Jubilee cocked her head to the side. "So, like, what kinds of things did you do?"
"Oh, dis an' dat." Remy shrugged, giving her a sly grin. "You not scared, chere?"
"Scared of what?" Her grin was playful, her tone almost challenging. "You gonna steal from me, Remy?"
"Maybe." His grin widened as he pulled her closer to him.
"And what would you steal?"
"Dis," he leaned down to her, pressing his lips to hers as his fingers ran through her dark hair.
Total shock coursed through Jubilee's veins, and her surprise was enough to make sparks crackle at her fingertips as she slid her hands around his shoulders to rest on his back. Remy brought his hand up to caress her cheek and-
"Ah-huh-HRUM." The sound of a throat clearing behind them made Jubilee jump a mile, and she spun to face the intruder, whipping her hands behind her back as though she'd been caught in the cookie jar.
Remy was not as quick to feign innocence. "Evenin', Mr. Summers. Beautiful night, don't you think?"
Scott's face was as solemn as always, but Jubilee could almost swear the corners of his mouth were twitching. "Little late to be outside, isn't it? Curfew's in twenty minutes."
"Ohmygosh, is it that late already? I totally promised Kitty I would let her help me study. Where does the time go? I'm totally sorry, Mr. Summers, I'm going inside right now..." Both men watched her go, her voice not so much stopping as trailing off as she practically bolted inside.
"Just gon' have a smoke, monsieur." Remy produced a pack of Marlboros from his pocket along with a zippo lighter. "I'm goin' back to my room after dat."
Scott gave him a hard stare for a moment before nodding, his face still stern. "Make it quick, LeBeau. And don't let me catch you out this late again."
"Oui, monsiuer," Remy replied glibly, lighting his smoke. Scott left him in the dim light and Remy couldn't stop the self-satisfied smile that was sprading across his face. Pitching the butt, he made his way back inside palming a playing card in his pocket thoughtfully.
As he walked past the hallway that lead to the girls dormitory, he paused, taking a detour down it, searching his pocket for a pen. Writing a quick note on it, he stuck it to the door by the corner, wedging it between the wood and the metal of the peephole. Knocking soundly, he turned and disappeared down the hall quickly.
"Hello? John?" Kitty's head emerged from the doorway, looking around the empty hallway. "Oh, honestly..."
"No way..." Jubilee was the one who noticed the card stuck to the door, and hurried to pluck it from it's place. "Check this out, Kitty."
Kitty inspected the card, suppressing a giggle. Next time, p'tit, I'll steal yo' heart, if you let me. "Is this guy for real?"
Jubilee sighed, taking the card back and leaning against the door. "I sure hope so..."
Jubilee palmed the card in her pocket, letting it catch on the inside of her knuckles and press into her hand.
